I would imagine it would end up being an even 3 way split. More like 5 way if you include the Koreans. In that scenario it will be a loss in sales for bmw. A loss in 3 series sales would be devastating.
Don't forget. When us fanboys stop lauding the bmw as the ultimate driving machine then that filters down to the masses.

This plan will work until it doesn't. I agree with you that BMW's reputation was built by a devoted fan base with great word of mouth from hardcore owners and the press. They are riding those coat tails for now, but that will not last forever.
It will catch up with them.
