Engine Knock
Afternoon all,
Wonder if you could assist with some advice and thoughts. Long story short, I drove my 320d yesterday for the first time in 9 weeks after a double hip replacement. My old man has driven it once a week ish around 30-40 miles to keep it ticking over. Upon load I notice a louder than usual whistle from what I thought was the turbo. I asked him to drive it again today, the good news ends where the whistle seems to have stopped. However on idle and under stationery revving the engine is knocking, a lot. There is also an intermittent high squeal/cheep. Rushed it down to the local garage, he was a bit stumped, thought top of the engine and maybe injectors. He and a specialist nearby can’t look at it for 3/4 weeks. Car is 4.5 years old on 32000. Do I take the hit and go to main dealer Thanks in advance |

Local indy might be a better option if you are out of warranty. PMW are good in Chelmsford. If that's too far, post your general area and maybe someone could recommend one.

Timing chains used to be a common issue on the 2.0l 4 pots but usually at higher mileages. Hard to know but loud knocking never a good thing. Could be injector, cam / tappet problem or even main bearing but that would come from lower in the block. I assume it hasn't been short of oil of run through deep standing water?
Keep us posted.

Thanks for your replies. It’s booked in for next Tuesday. Garage thinks it could be a belt liked to alternator, which might also explain why I’m not getting battery charge. 🤞🏻 will update next week

So alternator belt did indeed need changing, however this isn’t the end of the issue, the knocking is a different issue. It’s currently being stripped down at BMW as there was metal in the oil.
