Uh hello? 2 series?

F22 (m perf) and F87 are the leaders in driving dynamics for M perf and M lines. Everything else is a boat.

As far as the interior goes, it's nicer than the 3 series in certain areas, but one thing I noticed is that they actually managed to make the ambient lighting not as nice as the 3 series. Overall, I think I would rather have a 3 series instead. It's a much nicer car overall looks wise than the new 4.
Generally agree with your comments, although I am a little confused by the comments on the interior. It looks almost exactly the same as my M340 interior...not that easy to tell them apart.

The beginning of the end... All what makes BMW's designs iconic are gone in this patchwork of design clues from other brands, the gaping nose from Audi, the mimicky "diamond" decoration from Mercedes, the tail lights and window "kink" from Lexus. These cars are also getting bigger and bigger with too many complex shapes that will not age very well. Look at the "classic" iconic designs, it's the general line that stands out, not secondary "surfacings" of these so-called "modern" designs that will look old in a couple of years. For people who claim the nose inspiration was from the beautiful classic pre-war 328, the tall (and narrow) kidney was a technical constraint because of the tall engine in that car, not a "design" element and if you look closely at the car, there is no stupid surfacing element, just simple and elegant design that has stood the test of time. If you look at other classic designs from BMW such as Paul Bracq's E24 Sharknose 6-series, you don't find stupid surfacing work either, but a careful balancing work on the general shape of the car... Very sad time in the history of BMW IMO.

So just been reading an interview with Domagoj Dukec, the design chief and specifically, his comments about the grilles courtesy of Autocar UK:

Quote:
Why make the grille so bold?

“It should be in the core of BMW to have a product which makes a strong statement. It’s unmistakably BMW, unmistakably 4 Series. It’s not just logical; it has a very strong character that’s unique to our brand.”

What did you make of the reaction to the grille on the Concept 4 Series?

“In design, you can’t listen to social media reactions. Design is emotional, and everybody has an opinion and different taste. There’s no right or wrong in design. “The criteria for design is to make something unique, something daring. I’m 100% convinced something like this, although polarising in the beginning, is at the heart of BMW and a brand-shaper for us. In two or three years, I’m convinced this will be a really strong product for us on the road.”

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...matic-new-look

I definitely agree with him that the grilles are a "brand shaper".

A photoshop, using 2GC's grill (which, weirdly, I think is one of the best BMW grills right now) and with Hoffmeister kink.

That's the gross vehicle weight though, including cargo and everything? I don't think that the weight that's usually being compared?

The curb weight is 3977lbs and the EU empty weight is 1815kg/4001lbs.

I remember when the M2C was first announced - so many people on here crying over how 'ugly' the grille was, and how 'heavy' it was , and how it ruined the car. Fast forward a year or so, and everyone loved the M2C (grille included), and how well it drives, and weight forgotten...

Same story here with too many people rushing in with their opinions on the new grille and how 'heavy' the car is...

Yes phew, curb weight some 1000lb lighter and generally the comparison to make.

I am no fan of those grilles either but what a positive difference that makes to the G22 in my opinion!

Well lets see: 1) It is too heavy 2) It is too large 3) It is too bland 4) it has none of the signature BMW styling 5) it is too expensive 6) the interior , while nice, is basically from the 3 series 7) there is that grille!! Good luck BMW.

I agree with the designer that once BMW refines this design language, it will look very good. The grille looks a bit tacked on, especially with the hood line, so there is room for improvement there. I just wished that if BMW was going bold, they go BOLD. The side and rear of this car are so boring to me. And I don’t look at them and think “that’s a BMW.” Say what you want about the grilles, but the front end looks unmistakably BMW.

This looks like the true successor to the f32. I'd be all on board for it. Who wouldn't want to upgrade to this?

edit: and this version doesn't look like a mini 8 from the front. damn BMW should have been the design from the start

I like it overall. And the value is there. It's a lot of car with great features for the price IMO. The grill might grow on me, not sure.

But marketing guys are smart. They have all us M enthusiast guys crying about that grill. Even threatening to leave the brand. The grill is great for the regular car guy. Or woman. They needed a change. And the big grill makes a lifestyle and financial status demographic statement. Ok cool.

But then ... when they slap this baby off the GTS onto the new G80/82 they will find great joy in watching us jizz ourselves and clamour over each other to get our spot in line and pay full MSRP for the latest and greatest best looking M3/4 ever.

So the opinions dont matter? Why pay any designers then? People dont need to like the design, just draw a couple of lines on a piece of paper and that's that.

What an arrogant answer.

the top looks like a mini 8, however zarehs27 has a great Photoshop of how the 4 with the 2gc grill. That seems more of a evolution from the f32 grill to the new g22 grill. goddamn I'm still drooling over that Photoshop.
