What's up with the connected kidney grills???

Can't we just have some of the classic elements stay the same???

I love my X3M40i, fast, tight, ZF8 is as stated flawless and I can run comfy or sport tight with the adaptive.

But I do miss my 6MT 228i coupe. Loved the 6MT...needed 4 doors.

I'll wait to take a long spin in a G20. The M340i is slated to be a bit more powerful than the X3M40i. The M340i sedan will be fast !

If I really want a 6MT I'll take a serious look at the Golf R.
A 6yr./72,000 warrants a look.

Interesting, so it looks like starting with the new Z4 onwards each model will get its own uniquely shaped DRLs. Here's the X6M:

I always get bugs stuck on that piece between the kidney grills so now there will be less to clean.

Not feeling the connected kidneys. But we'll all get used to it. A lot of the OGs on there flipped out when the f30 came out. Everyone thought headlights connected to kidneys are hideous. Then everyone got used to it. Lol. This happens with every new model on the forums.

I'm a manual only guy, and drive a GTI because nothing from the other Germans fits my other requirement of being moderately light.

But, we own an F30 because our previous X1 35i was totaled. Both are automatics, the X1 a 6s and the 328i is the 8s. I actually preferred the 6s and never got the hype about the ZF 8s. We both dislike the F30 all around and were looking to get an Audi. But we borrowed an X3 M40i for a weekend and if the G20 is anywhere near as good, it will be a return to form.

The X3 transmission is honestly the first automatic that actually made me think this whole three pedal thing might be dead. It held gears where it should, it downshifted where it should. It just seemed wildly unrelated to materially the same transmission in our LCI F30.

Now if BMW USA wasn't all about margins and cared about enthusiasts, we'd order a G21 M340i and call it a day, but we'll end up with the X3 and it will be such an improvement over our F30, I think the better half will be happy.
I think the problem is most enthusiasts aren't voting with their cash, or are only buying what they want on the used market. If people don't buy 'em, BMW won't make 'em.
So called inter webs enthusiasts make up for fairly tiny fraction of sales. BMW (And so does most other manufacturers)cater to the mainstream buyer because that's where the money is. All those X series CUV and SUVS pay for the development of the hardcore "enthusiast" models. Porsche proved this with the very controversial but fairly successful Cayenne.

Good points, ironically I think what happens is that when companies become successful pushing the envelope, unless quirky becomes part of their brand, like Peugeot, they tend to play it safe as they don't want to take risks and alienate their customers and put their success at risk.

2007 was the high water mark for 3 series production, I remember really wanting an E90 M3 back then, I loved the car from every angle. To BMWs credit, the sales have been in the 400 - 500k mark since, which is a win as I would imagine a lot of cars have declined as people have moved to SUVs and crossovers.

I am going to have to see the new car face to face, I tend to gravitate towards sporty over luxury. I don't really think I want a car bigger than the current 3 Series. When I park, even my GT4 beside my buddies S2000 it looks like an SUV.

My initial impression is the new face of the car looks somewhat awkward. That being said, I remember seeing the F3X front and thinking that the front of the car looked pinched, it didn't take all that long, but I came around and really liked the way it looked, and still do.

When I walk my dogs the past couple of days, I walk past an E46 that has been parked in a lot I walk past. I am struck by how timeless the design is. I don't know it it is the design, or if it is my old brain.

Either way, I have got a while for things to sink in, it will be at least 3 years before I consider anything new from the people in Munich. They will need time to address all of the issues that will inevitably crop up. In the mean time, I will enjoy my cars and motorcycles.

What's up with standalone kidney grills? I hate them and much prefer the F30 look.

This next gen 3 series will mark a big change in BMW design language in my opinion. Along with the new Z4.
I hope it's good.

At least from what we can see so far, even though the grille is connected it looks like two distinct kidneys. Whereas the connected grille in the new M2 Competition just looks like one big grille, especially when you're looking at the car from farther away. I hope this is the case, anyways. When you look at the black grilles on the M2C and new 8er, it really looks like one continuous piece which just looks like a generic grille

If 5er only grew an inch this smaller car shouldn’t really grow more than that!? Extended wheelbase doesn’t necessarily mean more length if the overhangs are shortened!
BMW's own G30 product information gives the comparison of (F10) 4899mm vs. (G30) 4943mm, that's 44mm in my book.

For overhangs, take a look at the E90 vs. F30 comparisons. Don't have to increase, but normally do.
