So this is definitely a real issue and not in our heads like some think for whatever reason. I have went through 2 oil coolers this year on my M340i with ZTK package.
Once was a semi tire on the interstate, this just bent the entire frame of the cooler but did not case a leak. Still got it replaced with the rest of the damage.

Two weeks ago hit a spinning piece of metal pipe on the interstate someone dropped. Busted oil cooler, covered bottom and back of car in oil. Immediately pulled over as I saw all the white smoke as it hit the hot exhaust.

I was 3 hours away from home on a work trip. Waited 2 hours for a tow truck, and got it towed to a BMW dealer. Engine is okay and car is good after $1,500 in repairs.

All that being said I have just installed the turner motorsport skid plate for our cars. Obviously as stated it "is not suitable for cars with ZTK package"
Everything of course fits fine besides the last middle piece that goes over the cooler. I am waiting to take to a few shops to see how we can modify this to fit and clear the cooler. While also creating some opening for the cooler to function and pull heat out as it should. I will keep everyone posted and give you all the details possible. Also making a full YouTube video on it as well!

All the more reason to avoid unless tracking. There's been some debate here on why to get this package but I've driven my M340 in Palm Desert the last 3 summers (as high as 110F) with no noticeable hit soak - the car drives fine.

There are upsides to having this package — not the least, cosmetic upgrades that come with bigger brakes and calipers. But a hassle to fit in oil guard.

Yeah the biggest selling point for me is on the 2020 the ZTK package comes with the upgraded metal oil pump. So avoided the possibility of an out of warranty oil pump replacement that the 2020s are known for.

Nicer bigger brakes are always a plus. Just crazy that would beef up all the cooling but not protect it.

Lots more little stuff. Different oil pump. Stronger rad fan. Heat shield for steering rack, and a few other little things I don’t remember.

Two extra mini radiators. One behind each lower grill/vent on the front bumper.

Might depend on market - I'm able to see part of the car's radiator through the lower grille on mine and I don't have this package.

Either way, the most vulnerable part of this assembly is the cooler which I still think should have come fitted with a guard from factory. Not sure how these other "extas" translate to daily driving experience. Perhaps if one lives in an extremely hot climate; but I've seen folks (some on this forum) track without this package.

If OP is able to figure out the guard that might benefit those looking to install one and those considering optioning their order with this feature.

Not the lower grille in the middle, the side vents under the headlight on each side.
There is a separate auxiliary radiator cooler behind each one.

Yes the two grille on both ends of the bumper. Can see my radiator from each of those. Like I said, this could be msrket-specific.

Reminds me of the time I ordered my car; I was told that you get active microphone on passenger side along with Enhanced Bluetooth ONLY if you ordered wireless charging. Didn't option wireless charger but ended up having both equipped.

F30 pre LCI M sport adds 2 aux radiators too, and there were forum posts that those got punctured by debris on freeways.

In regard to the oi l cooler guard, I would think that can reduce downward airflow(and hence heat exchange efficiency) through the full horizontal surface of the cooler,

Has anyone tried some wire mesh or perforated plating? Thinking something like this.

I have some perforated plating that got delivered today. Going to use it when I modify the aturner Motorsport skid plate I have. Plan to tackle it tomorrow evening with my fab friend. I will report back!

On track days or whatever could always remove it for maximum cooling.

My thought process is, it is an added cooler right? So it is not a necessity to the operation of the vehicle as all other cars without the package do not have it. So me reducing some air flow is not going to hurt it as a daily driver.

So big no go on modifying the center section of the Turner motorsport plate. I have ordered a 1/8 5052 aluminum sheet to match the rest of the skid plate kit.
We came up with a really solid game plan to make our own and to mate up to the rest of the Turner motorsport kit.

Will document all I can and try to record some of the process to post on YouTube! Feeling pretty confident it will work and look good.

While waiting for it to arrive I am going to document and monitor oil temps closely so I can compare post oil cooler gaurd/skid plate going on!
