you can make a 4 cyl sound beastly and mean... i bet most of the m3/4 guys will ditch the stock exhaust the first chance they get. I bet that'll make a huge difference.

I think you should sell your M6 and buy a CLA then?

When Henry Ford made cheap, reliable cars people said, "Nah, what's wrong with a horse?" That was a huge bet he made, and it worked. -Elon Musk (CEO & Chief Product Architect of Tesla Motors.)

You're looking at the beginning of the end of the combustion engine. I guarantee you in my opinion the new M3 will have some sort of electric motor in it. Then the next generation after that BMW will be only an electric/hybrid sports car manufacturer for its entire lineup. Why do you think they are spending so much money on CF production? Wake up and see the future is here. Resistance is futile.

I currently have a turbo inline 5.
I've had a V8 S65 engine before.
I would take a V8 over a turbo inline engine on any given day

IF they design it right, there wouldn't be any need for a hybrid version unless they are worried about the turbo lag on a huge turbo pushing 30psi... or maybe design something like the new mercedes F1 where they separated the hot/cold sides of the turbo for efficiency / power.

The point is there are tons of new development they can look at and I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4cyl 2.4l turbo with the m3 name.
Sure, just boost it to 30 psi You can't trivialize the challenges of increasing output of these small displacement engines in a way that remains tractable for daily use. Mercedes is at 1.8 bar (around 26 psi) with their M113, and reviewers already complain about turbo lag. Again, to trivialize worries about lag is to ignore the elephant in the room.

If the M3/4 goes to an I4 turbo, it will have to either lose a significant amount of weight (actual weight, not ///Marketing weight), or M GmbH will have to incorporate some new technology that we haven't seen yet.

Also note that that Mercedes' split-turbo F1 design doesn't reduce lag directly, it only increases efficiency, and at what cost? The raw materials cost required to split that turbo has to be huge. Turbochargers spin at over 100K RPM. I can only imagine what kind of unobtainium is used in the connecting shaft and bearings. Of course, Mercedes is closely guarding the details, because the design is a big advantage for them right now.

I don't think enough people here have experience with a turbo 4 to speak on the matter. When you begin to DD a turbo 4 motor and then try to mod it in anyway or can relate to reliability please come back and speak.

Thats so stupid. Engines are beginning to become less and less charismatic. Do not want.

How about drop the weight, make all the other cars super effiecient, and keep the M cars using N/A or larger turbo engines.

Is it plausible to use the word plausible more than a plausible amount of times?

I for one don't believe a 4 cylinder would really stand up to the M marquee, bad enough as it is with them slamming M badges on anything and everything these days..

Does this mean that the F80/82 is an "instant classic" since it'll be the only M3/4 with a turbo'd i6?

I'm with ya. There is a lot of possibilities with a 4 cylinder with high rev capabilities paired with the right tranny. This could give BMW the baddest four banger on the market... This should be used in the 2 series down not in the 3/4M tho IMHO. Bring on the the baddest four cylinder on the market BMW
