My guess is the larger screen is to make it easier for the gesture recognition control to work more precisely.

I agree that the current implementation looks excessively goofy. It looks like some kind of last-minute compromise to meet pedestrian safety regs, or some such thing where the engineers beat out the designers.
I'm surprised there is so much negative comment on the high 'hood' line. If we look at the full range of BMW models, it is nothing new, many BMW models through the years have had a split hood line.

Even if it has been brought back (temporarily) for pedestrian safety, it is part of BMW DNA and heritage. Take as examples, the iconic E9 and E24.

It's not my viewpoint---just the topic of many posts of people that they are leaving the brand because of having to spend a few hundred more dollars on maintenance in the 4th year of ownership, and have to pay for wipers. I don't get it either.

Here's the 25-page thread where people are totally freaking out:

Longer and wider? Eventually it will be bigger than the 5 used to be, if it isn't already.

Better wipers and harder windshield glass would be nice too.

I promise you half those people won't make the jump. The maintenance plan wasn't something that was going to go on forever. This is BMW's way of slowly weening everyone off of it. The next step is to get rid of it completely.

Brands like Mercedes and Audi and Porsche do NOT offer maintenance at all and are doing just fine. Those brands do offer packages for you to BUY a prepaid maintenance plan, which is what I think BMW will end up doing after the smoke settles.

Are the exhausts tips changing??? they look round but the hole on the bumper looks rectangular and way bigger... does BMW always do this on prototypes or are we finally getting some nice looking exhaust tips instead of the soda straws??

If you're referring to the shape known as a car, I think it's been around much longer than 10 years, unfortunately

Its a shame they get bigger and bigger. F30's are about the size of a E23 7 and now this will be bigger than a E39, approaching E38 size.

Well due to the high fleet and entry model sales in Germany then yes these will be available as standard equipment.

Yes it not only assists in pedestrian protection but also the nose cone is easily replaced and protects the sheet metal bonnet in a low speed incident therefore reducing insurance costs.
There was an aftermarket company that advertised they were going to offer a solution. But were intercepted legally as they would have altered intellectual property as well as compromised front end safety aspects of the car.

That doesn't wash in my opinion Scott, it's 2016 and by the time this car is released LED and xenon technology will be even wider spread across cheaper brands.

BMW have got away with it for 3 generations I think a fourth is pushing it somewhat.

If we see standard LED/Xenon on M Sport / Luxury then that would at least be a sensible step towards the 21st Century

I dont see the point. I had to replace my xenons once I believe in the last decade and never had to replace any LEDs. So whats the use of incandescent lights which have to be replaced like every year anyway.

Here's a better answer.

It's a German car. The day BMW, Mercedes and Audi offer standard xenon lights across the line up, I'll drink beer out of a shoe.
