Trading my 2023 for 2020 m340

Yeah, title sounds nuts. I just purchased a pre owned 2023 m340i Brooklyn grey/Tacora. 15,000 miles. Lane collision feature. Mint condition. Factory warranty.

Please advise me friends

I swear I tried idrive 8. I can’t get used to it. I don’t have the HK stereo just hifi. No power lift gate. Headlights suck. The revs are annoying and high in sport settings. The clutter and lack of apps I don’t use makes me nauseous. And I adjust climate often.

I found a 2020. Pre 6/2020 for unlocked dme purposes. 54,000 miles. Black with black leather interior. Laser headlights. Idrive 7 (perfect). 360 cam. Lane assist etc. Power lift gate. 2020 factory “louder” exhaust. HK audio. Sport mode felt so crisp. No factory warranty. Can have videos on usb and video in motion unlike idrive 8 (huge for me)

I’m going to lose the taxes I paid on the 2023, $4800. And I’m trading my car in for 3500 less than I got it for. Oh and I have to pay 3000 tax on the new car.

12,300 cash essentially. Maybe let’s not count the new car tax. But yeah!

If this makes me happy do I do it? I loved the 2020 sooo much.

I’ll probably get Carshield extended warranty for the 2020.

If you are keeping the car for a long time and money is no big deal than go for it. 2020 is the goldilocks year for these

Sport mode will be identical, they haven't changed the drive train at all in the LCI. I have owned a pre-LCI g20 and now an LCI, I prefer idrive 8. The laser lights wont be any better than the LED's due to the crazy regs in NA. You can easily upgrade the hi-fi system. You can change the exhaust and it will be louder. Power liftgate I have had both never used the kick to open its a gimmick.

I think your nuts and basically lighting money on fire for a worse car.. but I light money on fire changing cars, mods, track days all the time so who am I to judge

You have a pre lci m340? Do you like ANYTHING at all better than the 2023?

The pre-LCI had better LED interior lighting, for some reason they took away the navy blue color I liked before. The pre-LCI key was metal and felt more solid than the plastic new one. Small things though relatively. The LCI has idrive 8, better perforated sensatec etc.

Yeah having driven both I agree. Red sensatec vs black leather. But ugh am I really going for a “worse” car per se? The miles part/warranty I understand. I’ve seen so many people order a 2022 purposely so they can get idrive 7. And then I also see those posts where a few say idrive 8 is awesome. Too bad we’ll never get the 8.5 update

For $12,300 keep the M340 and buy a 2005 M3 and it’ll take the edge off of iDrive 8 and a manual trunk.

Idrive8 freezes literally 10 times a day. Maybe I need to hard reset

Worse in the fact it is 3 years older and has 50k of miles on the suspension, paintwork, interior etc. A car that's done 50k cruising on the interstate is going to be in a lot better shape than one smashing around the pot holes on Manhattan for example. New for new the driving experience for both cars would be basically identical outside of the exhaust burble changes.

take whatever you expect to pay for the change over and dump it into the 2023.

-Bavsound stage 1 the stock radio
-Buy an exhaust
-Send the DME for a tune or get a JB4
-Do thr power liftgate retrofit
-Get XHP to fix the transmission tuning

Or just get the 2020 and make sure the car can read the oil level before buying :-)

Thanks brother. I thought of those things already but I swear I just hate the id8 interface. I tried to get used to it I can’t. And the lack of shifter ahhh.

The bavsound 1600
Retrofit trunk 900
Dme unlock 1750 vs 350 for the 2020
Exhaust eh I think the 2020 factory one is perfect for my taste

Totally understand. The 2020 is at a reputable dealership. Clean carfax no accidents dents scratches. Interior is literally 9.8/10. And I fear my red interior will get f’d up by my dog lol. Oh also I the lack of shifter feels odd every time.

If money is not an issue; why not? Drive what makes you happy.

Personally I wouldn’t — taking a $12K hit to get into a 2020 with 55K miles isn’t a great deal in my books. I’d rather sell the 2023 privately and buy the 2020. Moreover if this trade is happening through the dealership — they’d be making more from the deal than I would.

But then again it’s your choice — if these aren’t detractors go for it. A loaded 2020 is considered a unicorn and highly valued by this community. I own a 2021 and got mine right before all the chip shortages — I got it fully loaded and I’m very happy with, even more so because I dislike the 2023 for the same reasons you mentioned.

Exactly. Thank you! I was going to purchase the 2020 and sell the 2023 privately. I can get 4-5 grand more than the dealership is offering. BMW dealer said I have the most desirable color combo blah blah it would sell for 10k more than I got it for. But I think he was exaggerating a bit

55k miles is not significant for a b58, right? Worth paying 2200 yearly for an extended warranty? Car shield is offering protection on everything (electrical/ cooling etc) besides engine/trans

I wouldn’t go for such a trade.

I owned 2020 m340i, now driving 2023 lci m340i. New one is better/same in almost all aspects. I don’t really get why people dislike iDrive 8. I prefer it to privious one. You get much bigger/brighter/sharper screen and dash. Considering I only use CarPlay 99% of the time - I really don’t care how original interface works (climate controls are completely fine).

As for other aspects you mention - transmission setting are absolutely same. If you miss burbles and staff - you’d better upgrade your exhaust, but not replace a car 😅

As for headlights - you won’t see any difference in city with street lighting and only minor difference on highway with zero light on US spec lasers.

Considering all price factors and mileage - I wouldn’t go for a trade
