Remember this is 6-7 years down the road. Go back to 2007 and tell them the next M3 will be a 3L I6 with more hp and way more torque than the V8. Balls would drop. I for one think this is interesting. We went from I4 to I6 to V8 now back to I6 and in the future I4. Here we are again. The S14 was amazing. The Sport Evo pushed 235hp out of a 2.5L I4 way back in 1991. We can do much better today.

As for hybrid tech, remember that the P1 and 918 cost over a million and $845k, respectively. It adds way too much weight, that's why to counteract that more carbon fiber has to be used, driving up prices. I don't see hybrid being feasible for anything other than supercars until battery tech takes a big step forward. The Prius doesn't count. That thing is an insult to all cars.

In 2007, you didn't need an m3... nor did you need to flash forward 7 years. All you had to was look at an N54 with a mild tune .

4 bangers are still far behind for now. As much as I love the S55... quantifiably... it's only better than an N54 which came out in 2006 by merely the fact that it revs 1500, 600 rpm higher. So in all honestly... that is not that much progress.

I think you guys aren't thinking out of the box.

The next gen M3/4 will definitely be some kind of hybrid in which case a 4 banger would be sufficient. Take a look at the Porsche 918 Spyder today, it's cutting edge and getting rave reviews. It uses a v8 and two synchronous electric motors to supplement the V8 to make 875hp and and 944 ft-lb torque. This is today. Think how much better hybrid technology will be in about 7 years.

In ~2021, an M3/4 with a 4-cyl coupled to much better electric motors should be able to hit 500 hp without much effort. Technology is advancing fast and I think the gas engine will likely fade to black starting in about 10 years.

Why does BMW "need" to make these cars more fuel efficient and quiet and etc etc. Ford still makes one hell of a 5.0L V8 (Coyote) and it just keeps getting better. The new Mustang is extremely impressive. They aren't making any excuses.

But ford and gm are getting taxed by the us govt for emissions, where bmw is staying ahead of those taxes, unfortunately for our 8cyl and 6cyl wants

This. From a business perspective, less, if any, parasitic losses from (unnecessary/preventable) taxation.

I am starting to wonder - even if the whole car was made out of carbon fibre, it would seem difficult to get to a place where an I4 would feel E30ish

My $0.02 is that they will couple a 350hp 4-turbo with a rediculous electric motor. All naysayers will end up pre-ordering for a 0-60 in sub 4sec car...

Why not use something like a turbocharged 2.0 straight six instead of a 4 banger?

You don't get the displacement, but you get perfect balance, no counterweight and smoothness..

Thank you.

I recently said goodbye to an E93 M3 in favor of a 2013 mustang GT drop top (I live in one of the sunniest climates on earth, and I do like putting the top down). I know: many if not most most readers here may not relate to that decision. But my experience so far is that the Coyote-equipped GT is about 25% more efficient than the M3 in highway driving (the advantage is noticeable, though less pronounced, in town). The cars have very different personalities, driving styles and finish and trim levels, but the better trim levels in Mustangs, while nothing like those in a premium bmw, are pleasant enough places to spend time. What I like most is the Coyote's dual personality. You can drive around town burbling along in a totally relaxed manner, but swing the tach past about 3500 and the thing just rips. And ohhh, the sound!
