If the G20 M340i is gonna be xDrive-only for Europe, then that's a no go and I don't want to miss the deadline for ordering F30. Almost ordered a 6mt 340i but backed out. Gonna wait for a bit and then decide.
Same as you, I've no interest in X-drive/auto... I'll put up with the ZF box if I have to - as auto's go it's a very good one - but no way will I buy an X-drive!

I think the way things are going in the auto world, it's almost certain there'll be no manual box (apart from the base models and that's only to keep the entry price low for marketing) but personally I think there will be RWD for the M340i.

The current 340i 6MT is superb, I've had it a year now and it's hard to fault! In sport mode I even think the steering is fine! I think you'll be able to order these up until at least October time, but we should know nearer the time when F30 end of production is approaching! Whether we'll know at that point the exact spec of the G20 range though is anybody's guess!!

In mainland Europe, there seem to be more xDrives than in the UK and all my nation's dealers don't sell anything but xDrive diesels so I can't even test drive a 340i. I wouldn't mind an automatic gearbox, but if I wanted xDrive, I'd go to Audi.

Too bad the M3 is so damn expensive. Would be the perfect solution, but a 340i with LSD and power kit will do, I hope.

Is yours specced with Merino leather by any chance, mate?

Interesting, I recently had a 340i as a loaner and while the weight was different from my 2015 335i, the steering feel wasn't great and there's a dead spot on center that drove me crazy while driving the loaner. The 2017 car may have slightly...SLIGHTLY better steering feel but the deadspot on center was a deal killer. It was maddening.

You are correct the ZF8 is outstanding. Would rather have a 6MT like you had.

Would also point out my loaner was an XDrive and the suspension was garbage even in the firmest setting...Ok perhaps garbage is a bit harsh, but it was way too soft and underdamped. Reminded me a lot more of a Lexus ES than a BMW and in sport plus it was weirdly harsh.

This should help adjust the expectations for diesels:

No dead spot on centre at all on my 340i... that would be a total no no for me too! Not saying the feel is great, just that I’m happy with it. I came straight from a Cayman which obviously had better feel, but then the 3 is a more refined car than the Porsche 2 seater!

I would imagine the fact it was X-drive would likely affect the steering to some degree!? Did the loaner have VSS which I’ve heard gets varied reviews!

I did read that the LCI, while getting virtually no facelift at all, did get a major mechanical overhaul to try and keep up with the competition, as there was a new C Class, A4 etc. I think they did retune the steering to make it quicker!

No, UK spec is Dakota as standard, which I don’t mind! Some people seem to think Dakota is cheap, but any leather for free is a bonus to me... Porsche give us full artificial leather unless we want to pay thousands extra (which most Porsche buyers can afford to do!!)

Did look at the merino but it had lots of extra stitching which looked too fussy to me!

I agree. I think if you want a 340i but no x drive and no auto, you should just be looking at an M3 and be done with it. If price is a problem, just get CPO M3 for the same price and be happier.

There's a significant price difference between CPO 340is and M3s, for example in Germany and other European countries

I'm coming off lease soon and wanted to go back to the 3 series or M3. The M340i seemed like a good match until I read the details. Ok, I can probably accept the no manual as it's a dying breed, but x-drive? X-DRIVE?? I drive BMWs because I want RWD. I'm really hoping there is a RWD model in the lineup. To this day, I'm not sure I've ever seen a 335i or 340i xdrive in person.

Either way, extremely disappointing news if there is no RWD option. So I guess if I want a new RWD sedan with a 6 pot it's Mercedes Benz? *shudder*

M3 it is I guess.

Actually, Mercedes no longer offers a six pot RWD C-Class. The only six cylinder C-class in their line up is the C43, and that has standard AWD.

Not sure you can even order the f30 anymore. I put an order in on one back in December and we still have not received the build number. This means the December incentives will be expired before it comes time to do paperwork.

Without an LSD, the torque numbers in the current 340 already make the power somewhat useless in the rain, cold, snow, or anything else that isn't perfectly clear and hot pavement. With run flat tires, you are not going to be using much of that power in most conditions. Adding nearly 20% more power with less weight would only make this more apparent. AWD is essentially becoming required to be able to actually maximize the use of power. If there is little weight impact and there is an option to send 100% power to the rear wheels, there really is not much to complain about here.

Manual is going the way of non-assisted steering racks. Everyone complained about the boosted racks back in the day and now nobody wants to bother with that. Once again, added power and lower weight make it harder for humans to keep up with the capability. The gap continues to grow.

I’m pretty sure you will be able to add an M-performance LSD on the new RWD M340i.

Thank you! Love your insight.

That would be the first appearance of a true LSD on an AWD, non-M car, from the factory, yes?
