My view is that there should be real buttons and switches for those features that one will use while driving. For all other features, go ahead and put the stuff in IDrive and I don't care if I have to go through sub menus to get there...I don't have to take my eyes off the road to do that.

My G30 is pretty terrific in that regard. I have the switches for the AC, the seats, and the volume on the radio. It would be nice to have the station switch also but the availability of the presets combined with the display of the presets on the HUD make that unnecessary. And, of course, the BMW programmable buttons.

I suspect that BMW saved $1.25 by eliminating the AC switch. But that $1.25 might cost them a customer. Short sighted thinking.
I haven't tried it, but I suspect the AC button function can be achieved via the voice command on the G20. May take 2 secs longer than a simple button press, but it keeps both hands on the wheel while doing it.
