From calling BMW Genius hotline with the same question, my understanding is that they often wait for enough cars to be available to ship.

Order placed in NJ 5/9. Production begins 5/13, paint booth 5/15, assembly in progress 5/17, quality chk 5/20, awaitcarrier assign. 5/21, dispatched from factory 5/22. At the port 5/24. This is where she sits today.
