The 340 may be somewhat lighter but improvements from 4.1 to 3.5 are not the same as going from 6.5 to 6.0. My guess is we may see a 4.0-4.1 with this car which really is great but what I am really more interested in is to see if this will trap close to 115. My guess is no but we may see 112-113 which would be still be really good for this middle trim Car.
You're definitely correct that 3.5 is not happening, but I would expect it to be able to hit 3.9 for places like C&D and R&T. That's similar to what they did with the M5 (advertised number of 3.2 and C&D and R&T were able to hit 2.8). They like that type of press and have been doing it a lot in the last couple of years with all their cars, not just the M cars. Even if it's just barely under 4.0 at 3.99999 that'll make headlines across all major publishers. Based on everything I've heard/read about it and what they've been doing with the advertised numbers compared to the actual numbers in their recent history, I would expect they'll do it with this one, too. And, let's face it, BMW needs the press to not only love this 3 Series but declare it the true benchmark in the category again. The competition is strong right now.

I'd certainly expect the new M3 to do a 3.5.
