Ah interesting, yeah I looked it up and I have iDrive 5.0. Wireless carplay works flawlessly for me, the only complaint I have is that it's still only 2/3rds of the otherwise gorgeous wide screen.
Personally, "plug it in" would not be a viable solution for me. I make a lot of short trips in the car and having carplay start up while my phone remains in my pocket is a big plus.
