The Olympics have always been political because it is an event where different countries with different cultural, religious, political, etc. backgrounds can come together and compete based on common ground: love for their individual sport.

It is discomforting, however, that the international public as a whole had turned their eyes away from some blatant Chinese propaganda. China pressures other countries to abide to their will with their current economic position.

Being Taiwanese, I was pretty upset that Taiwan is not recognized as its own country, and could not wave its own flag. Instead, Taiwan had to be called "Chinese Taipei." This has been ongoing for years, and many countries, including the United States do not "officially" recognize Taiwan as an independent country because of economic consequences China would bring on any country that does.
