Folding hard tops are alive & well for those who can afford them over cheaper alternatives with tents.

Enjoy your short lived resurgence while global markets reject the tent.

Time and the market will tell what's antiquated like the dial up.
I don't think the hard top is a question of affordability, nor do I think you can compare a 4 series hard top to the hard top of a Ferrari or McLaren because I doubt those exotic companies (McLaren anyway) has a hard top that adds 400-500lbs to the cars weight - like the bimmer's has been known to do.
