The torque advantage is really only relevant in first gear in a drag race or if you are accelerating from 2000-4000rpm. This is when a diesel needs to shift and loses the mechanical advantage of the gear ratio and the petrol just keeps revving to 6000rpm or so and makes up a huge amount around that point. Then of course the petrol will spend the rest of the race above 4000rpm right on max power.
This is why the Audi is quite good for the first part of the rolling race, then it needs to change up and just falls back compared to the E53
