With the introduction of G20, 3 series cars were provided the ability to receive OTA software updates. US cars were only recently enabled to accept this capability. For example, my car received version 07/2020.54 about a month ago. Prior to that, only dealers could update software.
To find out what version of software your car has, select CAR, SETTINGS, GENERAL, scroll down to & select REMOTE SOFTWARE UPGRADE. This option serves two purposes. Displayed on first line is version currently in car. If you select, CHECK FOR UPDATES, it will do just that.
BMW updates software to fix bugs/problems & provide additional or enhancing features. Major updates are made in March, July & November each year -- hence the update numbering system; additionally, minor updates are the 2 digits after decimal.
To find out what is included in major updates, go to BMW USA Connected Portal:

At botton is a listing of what's included in major updates.
Finally, think the reason you got an OTA update, even though your car is new, is to put your car on the same baseline version. Again using my car as an example, it had been updated to 07/2020.45 at dealer, but as I said, was OTA'd to 07/2020.54
Hope that helps!
