I'm guessing lower starting price, worse engine options, and no lux trim options to slot under the new Prado. 4Runner gets the base i4 only, Prado gets the turbo i4 hybrid, GX gets the TTV6. I wouldn't even be surprised if they canceled the TRD Offroad and Pro trims too, just keeping the TRD Sport appearance. If you want the lockers you need to step up the Prado while the 4R becomes the "rugged mom car".

But yeah Toyota having 3 of the same SUV feels a little bloated. Maybe the 4Runner will get phased out or become just a Prado trim. Especially with the Grand Highlander taking a lot of the non-offroad 4R customers.
