Well, BMW found out that the engine does not need the same ammount of air all the time and by including an adjustable/adaptive grill they could make the car more efficient and thus getting better MPG and better performance at high speeds.
Pretty simple.  |
And getting the engine hotter faster and keep it warmer for longer
