I did try to separate the chrome trim from the black inner part (on the stock grill) like you mentioned and, for the life of me, couldn’t get it out. When I moved to the next clip after unlocking the first one, the one I unlocked would click back into place. That drove me mad and I stopped trying after a few minutes
