Not necessarily true. There are instances of vehicles that have become available after January and did not adopt the latter available model year. One example I can think of off the top of my head is the MY2008 M3 which went on sale after January 2008. There have been many other instances from BMW and other manufacturers as well, in some cases even when the car comes onto market near mid-year.

I agree that automakers usually choose to take advantage of the later, "newer" model year, but it is not always the case.
