I guess by design for some reason, but it would be rather useful to be able to talk to her and give navigation instructions or to play whatever music when I'm reversing down out my drive.

Yeah that's been a nuisance since forever with voice control and the reverse gear even on older BMW models. If you're midway through a voice command (by pressing the button) and put the car into reverse, it'll self-cancel.
I usually am putting in a navigation destination as I back out of my garage and it infuriates me even after 4 years of knowing it won't work 😂
