The problem for Toyota, or anyone really, is that a Corvette is $55k and generally has great incentives, and a Corvette and Mustang are significantly cheaper and offer impressive performance.

The 370Z has been in that no mans land forever and barely sells. What magic act can Toyota bring to this fight that no one else has? The MkIV was an impressive car, but was a sales flop, like the 300Z, RX7 and Porkpie 3000GT.
Well the 300ZX had pretty decent sales in the beginning. All in all they sold about 90k Z32 in the US from 90-96.

What went wrong with the 370Z? IMO it got uglier and more expensive.
The 300Z did great when it had the market to itself and when the C4 was, well, the C4. But the C5, rX7 and Supra took a lot of the wind out of its sail.
