It doesn't affect prices much. Typically the asking price for high end lenses at the el-gouge-o sites like fredmiranda.com will be 80-85% of the price at the main online retailers (B&H, Adorama). These stores, however, have the nasty habit of raising their prices when the instant rebates come around so actual price varies little and any savings goes straight into their bottom line.
The only way I've found to do better than this is to wait for cashback deals (which happen to quickly for stores to adjust their prices) or to hang out on Craigslist and wait for the occasional motivated seller.
