Those animals look a bit more like elk than the whitetail deer we commonly see in the US. Maybe they are Red Stag.
Here in America, the deer normally don't form a herd that size, especially with males and females together. Usually a herd is mainly female deer (does) and the young deer that aren't weaned yet. The male deer (bucks - typically the ones with antlers) tend to live alone and only group together during mating season when they are chasing the does.
Other than that, yes, deer vs car accidents are quite common in the US, but it is usually one deer that gets hit, not a herd of them.
