On paper BMW is not supposed to sell as well as Mercedes, Audi, Lexus etc. A focused automaker producing the "ultimate driving machine" is not supposed to chase volume. But the fact that they do speaks volumes about the priorities of management over the past 15-20 years.

Ehhhh, Marketing aside, BMW's "heritage" was never small volume niche market performance cars, was it? If so, when? I'd say their heritage is more executive sedans than performance cars ... if we look at their mid-century models:
Not a lot of performance models in there ... and ///M didn't debut until 1987 ...
If you were talking Porsche, ok I'd agree - they started with sports cars and only recently moved into luxury cars, but BMW started as a luxury brand, not so much a performance brand ... unless I'm missing something ...
