No, it's not a polarization issue, it's a brightness issue (like turning the brightness down on your phone screen). Wearing any type of sunglasses makes it that much worse, as you're further reducing the amount of light your eyes are getting from the display.
FWIW - My friend who lives in Fort Lauderdale has a new m840i that has the issue, even in the Florida sun. So I have zero hope BMW is addressing this in any fashion currently. The only good news being that if it ever does receive a fix it should be 100% software driven, so previous model years shouldn't be excluded.
