and I called to confirm - they won't issue rebates after Jan 1, 2020 (at least to me) since I was not a member for at least 6 months...

I have been a member for a long time. I think a few years ago they changed the terms so if you bought a three year membership you could immediately qualify for a rebate. Then last year they announced what you read. I think they are trying to build a club based on loyalty to the brand and not just a rebate strategy.
