In that list there are two models that fits your description of the first few models; the M1 and the E30 M3.

Between the M1 and E30 M3 there was three "M Performance" models before the E28 M5 and then the E30 M3...

So no, the first few generations wasn't mostly homologation specials. The first few models actually had a predominance of versions that would compare to todays "M Performance" lineup.
Can I point out that my 850CSi has an S70 engine and a WBS chassis code, thus should be in that list?
