The comparison is not an auto vs manual or AWD vs RWD. It's really a 3-series vs an M2 Competition that's the real comparison. And how AWD in a future M3/M4 is more than overdue.
But regardless of whether it's an M car or not... it's still awd vs rwd which for a drag race makes all the difference.
If an M340 beats a Porsche 992 is not a "AWD vs a RWD" argument. It's a 3-series beating a $100k 911.

Same situation here. The new 3-series is so well engineered that keeps up with the current M2 Competition, at a power deficit, weight disadvantage plus an "auto" transmission.
