I think they're simply trying to put too many buttons on the wheel now making wider spokes essential... personally I love a wheel with zero controls on... my 2013 Cayman had a lovely 'clean' steering wheel... it's there to steer the car & I rarely use the wheel mounted controls anyways (maybe volume +/- occasionally) technology really can ruin design in my opinion!
