But...every other BMW I saw on my way to the store from there looked dated...some extremely dated as a first gen. X5 with tiiiny grills that looked almost silly.

On my way out from the store the new 7 was still there and this time I didn't think it looked bad, instead it looked fresh and bold.

No doubt this new M3 will date the old quickly. Dated doesn't mean ugly, the F80 will always remain a handsome car.
I still haven't gotten into the look of the new 7 yet. Your perspective truly shows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me it will all depend on how the new grills are designed. I like the Audi design, but the Audi design is more cohesive; it seems like the car was designed around the grills. The BMW grills look like an afterthought. Even the Lexus IS grills look more cohesive to my eye.
