I think your instinct is correct and you articulate very well why birthday cards are awkward. It's an attempt to court the customer on a more personal level and while the intent is appreciated - I think any nice message or card that doesn't try to exploit the birthday as a crutch would be more appreciated and better chance it's taken as genuine
