because the S-system is medium format.
just as full frame 35mm-format cost much more than a crop sensor DSLR.
huge differences.
but Leica IS quite expensive - a very niche product. quality unsurpassed.
the new M9 is bitchin'. but i wouldn't trade my D3's for it, because the only lenses i'd want to use for it, cost as much as the body itself, and more.
