If it were true, the M3 would get the G20s nose. It doesn't, because in the grand scheme of vehicle development, a bumper mould is literally nothing. Additionally, just because the old M3 and M4 shared a face (the first generation where an M3 had a different face to lesser 3er brothers) I think people assume this is written in stone.
Why?
We were told by the designers he whole reason the 4 has that fugly grille is to differentiate it from the 3 and make it (ugh) 'more dynamic'. They want it to look different to the 3, and the 3 is for more conservative buyers. Putting the new M4 face on it contradicts that comment...?

Yeah, because it only needs the mould for the front bumper
. We are talking about immense cross-divisional efforts for BMW to design, develop, qualify and ultimately manufacture such a bumper. And this for a vehicle which is sold significantly less than a normal 3/4 series BMW. The reason they use different bumpers for the X5m and X6m is probably due to the fact that these models are less cost-sensitive and are offered at a much higher price.
Besides the functional aspects of a bumper, I tend to look at things from a cost perspective.
