Well.. from the thread on auto vs DCT, it seems that one of the reasons for the generic ZF8 choice is that the design lets them modify just the torque converter to add in a second drive output for AWD or a hybrid electric motor system. Not easy with the existing 6MT.
The ZF8 is very unlikely to be a rewarding experience for those who like to make their own gear change decisions (it
certainly isn't in an X3M). I'm sure that those who drive in a straight line between stoplights and have a heavy right foot will be fine....but that's not why I buy an M car.
Since we now know it's going to be early 2021, I have over a year to sew some wild oats. ;-)
