It would be great if you specify the types of exercises that helped you. I regularly exercise my lower back and having stronger muscles doesn't necessarily mean that they will become more resilient to long periods of time in an awkward position. That's more an example of prolonged isometric tension. For an exercise like hyperextensions to transfer to this situation, the duration of the sets would need to be long.

Also, exercise might make the discomfort worse before it improves. I know that when I've recently worked out, an uncomfortable seat feels that much less comfortable to fatigued muscles. It's not that big a deal for me, but just figured I'd throw that out there for those with back issues worse than mine.
I don't know how hyperextensions helps but my core muscles inadvertently got developed overall. In general my posture and sitting long periods became easier.
