Actually quite the opposite of space inefficient. The Merc hybrid setup really is ingenious. A very modular setup, they could basically bolt behind any of their ICE powertrains. They have the packaging down to two units, the battery pack and an EDU(which houses electric motor, two speed gearbox, lsd). This is now the third AMG model to get it, along with the AMG GT 63 E-perf and C63 E-perf. Only difference being size of battery pack. What BMW is doing with the XM and upcoming M5 powertrain is a lazy solution, nothing new really. Stellantis has been using a similar setup in their 4xe Wrangler(sandwiching an electric motor between ICE and ZF auto gearbox).
