I think Porsche's numbers are more a result of their offerings and price points than controversy over their designs. When they introduced a modestly priced four-seater in the Macan the sales were huge showing there is a large appetite for their design. The problem is previously if you wanted to spend less than 100k you only got two seats.
As far as their customer base, they may not like change, but Porsche also does a tremendous job listening to their core customers and giving them what they want which is why there is a GT3 touring and GT4 now.
