Turning on the heater helps cool the engine - you're venting the heat from the engine. It does actually work.

I've done this to keep my car from overheating on my engine swapped and turbocharged Nissan back in the 1990s which had various problems... the things I was willing to put up with to add horsepower back then... lol

But on a modern car, it is not necessary if your car is well maintained.
