Because the competition has moved to FWD platforms, which have some inherent benefits for packaging and cost, both of which are important factors to people considering a low-end sedan from a luxury marque (young professionals starting a family). Coupe buyers are typically less sensitive to those things. Since a 2 series sizes car fits right in between the Mini Cooper UKL platform and 3/5/7 CLR platform, it's possible to split the 2 series between the two platforms without too much effort.
I'd argue that it's actually a pretty smart idea, if a bit unorthodox.
