A mono-grill design is very different from a design perspective as is much more forgivable and less pretentious. The reiteration of a mono-grill can be seen in almost all other cars with different interpretations, from elegant, to classic or sporty. Mercedes, Aston, Audi, etc, etc. Depends on the shape too as the shape and form can induce other variations that can go to ugly too.
Playing with the double grill like BMW can be very tricky, and as we can see, can go into grotesque as well...
BMW should have kept a nice classic proportions and play with a 3D depth and other tools to make it modern and desirable...
