Not actually sure, you can enable the new Sporty/Reduced sound modes in the G20 properly now. If you do that it will actually make the exhaust function like it used to, so I assume the plan is to make that the default at some point.
My car is a February 2019 build, I know cars built after July are fairly different to mine
