I followed the handbook - max 4500 rpm from memory for the first 1200 miles. I then stepped up by 500 rpm per 250 miles, so I was using full rpm after 2000 miles.
It's probably overly cautious, but I've done this with all my BMWs and never had a problem with oil consumption.
