Why Sigma doesn't make some super-tele primes is beyond me. Their zooms are not even close to Canon/Nikon primes, IMHO, but they have the ability to fill a huge hole in the $4000 to $9000 range with relatively fast (f/4 or f/3.5 for super-teles) and should be able to develop very competitive (IQ wise) primes.
They've got enough market share and respect in the super-tele zoom market that I'd think that they could afford to invest in developing a killer 600mm f/4 prime. I'd be very interested to try something like that.
If you absolutely can't afford the Canon/Nikon super-tele primes, then I think that Sigma is the way to go. Yes, you sacrifice some IQ, but your wallet stays much, much fatter. However, if you can afford $5000 to $6000, then the Series I Canon primes can't be beat.
