The Chinese market only buys large BMWs. They barely sell any 3 series and the ones they do sell are long wheelbase versions. Also, while China may be the largest single market for cars/BMW, western countries as a whole are still a large majority. Why would BMW cater a car specifically towards 1% of the market? If that. While it could be argued that large grilles on the 7 series or X7 might be because of the Chinese market, it makes no sense to make the regular 3 series a normal grille and only the M3/4 and 4 series with the buck tooth grille if it's just for China. None at all.
The assertion that the Chinese market is responsible for this is lazy at best.. This is just BMW's new design language. Simple as that. I guarantee it won't be as bad in a few years. It took me a while to warm up to the E90. While I still think the E46 is nicer, the E90 LCI is a fairly good looking car, IMO.
