Thanks for the detailed write up. Very similar to my sentiments although I didn't test drive an Alpha - cross shopped the C43, M340ix and F80. In the end I decided to go with the M340i as it was the most well rounded car for my requirements, comfortable for DD and family hauling duties and sporty enough for the occasional spirited drive. To me it also had the best chassis. But mostly I just loved this version of the B58 as it's silky smooth, pulls like a horse and embodies what the i6 should be and what the brand is most famous for. Yes the steering is numb and the weight/size is noticeable which is a let down of what is an otherwise outstanding modern day BMW.
When I test drove the F80 I left the dealer feeling quite underwhelmed, the suspension felt skittish and I just didn't like character of the S55. If I didn't have to get into a larger 4 door car I would have held on to my OG M2 which to me was the perfect size, has the superb DCT and of course the N55 engine & exhaust note which I completely adored.
