I think it's important to distinguish between iDrive software updates and ISTEP updates.
iDrive software updates shouldn't change drivetrain related items, but rather focus on actual iDrive software. I'd be surprised if the drivetrain was actually changed from the software being updated.
What likely happened is that the ISTEP was updated along with the iDrive software, which could have changed the drivetrain setup. There have been some posts about drivetrain changes after taking their vehicle into the dealer, whereas other folks haven't noted changes.
