Exterior is a tough sell, and I know we all can add onto that from different perspectives.
The interior, same as the 3 series, is a far departure from the quality of previous generations. What I mean by this is the use of fake leather on more surfaces. The trim going across the dash feels very skimpy, almost as much as if not more than the current 2 series.
You could argue that most of that trim was brought down around the gear lever area, but I feel that area has botched BMW's philosophy by being too busy and not enabling the driver to keep their eyes on the road.
I feel Mercedes-Benz takes the win in smart interior design this time - their E Class being the best example.
